Christie's teamed up with Droga5 to create their first ever advertising campaign, unveiling the top secret upcoming sale of Leonardo da Vinci's "Salvator Mundi". Only one of about 15 da Vinci's in existence, the Salvator Mundi was thought to be lost or destroyed before it was rediscovered a little over 10 years ago. It has been called "the Holy Grail of art discoveries" and "a bigger deal than discovering a new planet". According to Alan Wintermute of Christie's, “To see a fully finished, late masterpiece by Leonardo, made at the peak of his genius, appear for sale in 2017 is as close as I’ve come to an art world miracle.”
News sites such as The New York Times, NPR, and Vogue have chronicled the importance of both the work of art and the sale itself. The painting sold for $450.3 million, an auction record for art.
The teaser below appeared on Christie's homepage to officially announce the sale.
